  14. <p>    DIED. Donald Barthelme, 58, innovative journalist and
  15. fiction writer who helped revive the popularity of the short
  16. story during the 1960s; of cancer; in Houston. Specializing in
  17. surreal, collage-like pieces that frequently appeared in the New
  18. Yorker, Barthelme published eight short-story collections (among
  19. them, Come Back, Dr. Caligari and City Life), three novels, a
  20. book of parodies and a children's book, The Slightly Irregular
  21. Fire Engine, for which he received a National Book Award in
  22. 1972. A fourth novel, The King, is due to be released next year.
